Oura Ring 4 vs Whoop 5.0: which one actually measures your sleep?

Both are sold as recovery devices. Only one of them has been validated against clinical polysomnography at scale — and the gap between the published evidence and the marketing is where this comparison gets interesting.

Oura's sleep algorithm has been validated against polysomnography in 96 people across 421,045 epochs (91.7% accuracy, κ = 0.65). Whoop's published PSG validation used 12 people, and the strongest independent test of a Whoop device found much weaker wake detection. What does the published validation data actually say?

Oura has the larger and cleaner evidence base. Its Gen 3 ring running sleep-staging algorithm 2.0 was tested against multi-night ambulatory polysomnography in 96 adults, producing 421,045 scored 30-second epochs — one of the biggest consumer-wearable validations ever published. Whoop's headline PSG validation used twelve people over a ten-day lab protocol, and its lead author's research position was sponsored by Whoop at the time.

Whoop 4.0 scored κ 0.37, sensitivity 93.6%, specificity for wake 40.1% — behind Apple Watch Series 8 (κ 0.53), Fitbit Sense (0.42) and Fitbit Charge 5 (0.41). Every device tested detected sleep well and wake badly.

Why you can't compare those numbers directly (and what you can conclude anyway)

Here is the part most comparisons skip. These studies used different people, different hardware generations, different scoring rules and different labs. Putting 91.7% next to 89% and declaring a winner is bad statistics, and we're not going to pretend otherwise.

What survives that caveat is more interesting than a horse race:

  • Every consumer wearable is good at detecting sleep and bad at detecting wake. Sensitivity sits in the 90s for all of them; specificity ranges from 29% to 73%. If you lie still and awake, almost all of these devices will score you as asleep.
  • Finger beats wrist for photoplethysmography. Oura's 73% wake specificity is the highest number in any of this literature. It's a sensor-placement advantage, not marketing.
  • Independent studies score Whoop lower than Whoop-funded ones. κ 0.49 in the sponsored study; κ 0.37 in the independent six-device test. That direction of difference is a well-documented pattern across health tech, and it's why we weight independent replication above sample size.
  • Nobody's four-stage staging is good. Oura's REM accuracy of 90.6% is genuinely strong; Whoop's four-stage agreement of 64% means roughly one epoch in three is put in the wrong bucket. Treat any "you got 42 minutes of deep sleep" claim as an estimate with a wide error bar attached.

How to read a κ. Cohen's kappa corrects agreement for chance. 0.61–0.80 is "substantial", 0.41–0.60 "moderate", 0.21–0.40 "fair". Oura's 0.65 and Whoop's 0.37–0.49 sit in different qualitative bands — which is a more honest summary than any percentage.

What do they really cost over two years?

The pricing structures are designed not to be comparable, so here they are on the same axis. All figures are list price, verified 1 September 2026, with no promo pricing.

The interesting result: the two mid-tier options land within $11 of each other over two years. Every "Whoop is cheaper because the hardware is free" argument dissolves at about month nineteen. What differs is the shape of the risk — Oura front-loads $349 you can't get back, Whoop keeps charging until you successfully cancel.

What happens to your data when you stop paying?

This is the axis nobody compares, and it's the one that costs the most money later. Oura's membership gates the analysis, but a lapsed member keeps account access to export historical data, and the ring keeps recording basics. Whoop is a service, not a device: end the membership and the app stops showing you anything, because you never owned the strap in the first place.

I've spent three years watching people buy the wrong one of these, and it's almost always the same mistake: they buy a measurement device when what they wanted was a coach.

Oura is the better instrument. That isn't close, and the published evidence backs it. But an instrument only pays for itself if you're going to run an experiment with it — change your caffeine cutoff, test a room temperature, actually look at the trend after four weeks. If you're not going to do that, a very accurate number about last night is a $489 way to feel judged at 7am.

Whoop is the worse instrument and the better product for most athletes, because it tells you what to do. The strain target is opinionated. It's occasionally wrong, and it's still more useful than a perfect number with no instruction attached. If I could only keep one, I'd keep Oura — because I'm the kind of person who runs the experiment, and because I refuse to rent access to my own history. That's a preference, not a verdict, and I'd rather say so plainly than dress it up as objectivity.

What genuinely annoys me about both: neither shows you an error bar. Whoop's own validation says its four-stage agreement is 64%, and the app still draws your hypnogram as though it were traced from an EEG. Confidence intervals are not a hard UI problem. Somebody ship them.

Buy Oura Ring 4 if…

  • Sleep is the outcome you're chasing
  • You want the best-validated staging available to consumers
  • You want to export and keep your data
  • You won't wear a strap 24/7
  • You'd rather pay once and rent little

Buy Whoop 5.0 if…

  • You train four or more days a week
  • You want daily load guidance, not a dashboard
  • Live workout heart rate matters
  • $0 up front decides it
  • You'll actually use the coaching

Buy neither if…

  • You won't act on the data
  • You're primarily anxious about sleep — tracking reliably makes that worse
  • You want clinical answers; these are consumer estimates
  • A fixed bedtime is the change you haven't tried yet

One clinical note. If you suspect sleep apnoea, neither device is the answer and neither claims to be. Both will happily report "poor sleep" for years while the actual cause goes undiagnosed. Get a real sleep study.

Do you keep your data if you cancel?

With Oura you retain account access to export your history, and the ring keeps recording basic metrics. With Whoop the membership is the product — cancel and the app stops showing your data, and the strap is not yours to keep using.

Can Oura or Whoop detect sleep apnoea?

No. Neither is a diagnostic device. Both can show disturbed sleep patterns that might prompt you to seek a proper assessment, but a home or lab sleep study is the only thing that answers the question.

Why do the validation numbers differ between studies?

Different cohorts, hardware generations, scoring rules and funding sources. Studies funded by the device maker have historically reported stronger results than independent ones — which is exactly the pattern visible here, where Whoop's sponsored study reports κ 0.49 and the independent study reports κ 0.37.

Is a ring better than a wrist strap for sleep tracking?

For photoplethysmography, yes — the finger has denser arteriovenous anastomoses and less motion artefact than the wrist, which is the mechanistic reason ring-based devices lead on wake detection. Placement, not branding, explains most of the gap.
