Whoop MG review: brilliant coach, brutal contract
Nobody models training load better. Nobody makes it harder to leave. We spent 31 days training on Whoop's guidance, then spent 40 minutes trying to cancel — and the second number is why this isn't an 85.
Buy Whoop if you train four or more days a week and want coaching rather than a dashboard. The strain and recovery model is the best in the category. Its published polysomnography validation used 12 people — by a WHOOP-sponsored researcher — and cancellation took five screens and 40 minutes in our testing.
Buy it with your eyes open, and set a calendar reminder.
If you train hard four or more days a week, Whoop's strain and recovery guidance is genuinely the best coaching layer in consumer health. The membership model — annual commitment, no refunds, a cancellation path with five screens — is the tax you pay for it.
The score, axis by axis
What we liked
- Strain targets that adapt to yesterday, not to a template
- Best-in-class live workout tracking on the wrist
- Sleep coach recommendations that survive contact with real life
- Hardware swaps included in the membership
What we didn't
- Five-screen cancellation flow with a retention offer on each
- Export is JSON-only and rate-limited
- Recovery score still spikes oddly after long-haul flights
- Annual commitment billed up front, no pro-rata refund
The coaching is the product
Strip away the strap and Whoop is a coaching engine that happens to own a sensor. Thirty-one days in, the thing that kept us opening the app wasn't the score — it was the fact that the score came with an instruction. Under-recovered on a Tuesday, and it doesn't just say so, it tells you what a productive Tuesday looks like anyway. That's a harder product to build than a dashboard, and it shows.
It's the only app in our lab that made a tester train less and improve more. We just wish leaving it didn't feel like breaking a lease.
Where the numbers land
| Metric | Whoop MG | Reference | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Workout heart rate | ±2.1 bpm | Chest strap ECG | Excellent |
| Total sleep time | ±14 min | Home PSG | Good |
| Deep sleep | ±29 min | Home PSG | Fair |
| HRV (rMSSD) | ±9.4 ms | Home PSG | Good |
The contract problem
We time every cancellation flow we test. Whoop took five screens and 40 minutes, including a support chat, and offered a discount at three separate points. Under our rubric that's four dark patterns in a single flow, and it is the single biggest reason a very good product scores in the seventies. Set a calendar reminder 30 days before renewal; you'll need the head start.
Who should buy it
- Buy if you train four-plus days a week and want a coach, not a chart.
- Consider Oura if sleep measurement is the priority — here's the head-to-head.
- Skip if you want to own your data or hate annual commitments.
