Sleepio vs Sleep Reset: the most-tested insomnia app, against a human coach

CBT-I is the first-line treatment for chronic insomnia — ahead of medication, in every major guideline. These are the two most prominent ways to get it through a phone, and they are not equally evidenced.

Short answer

Sleepio wins on evidence by a wide margin; Sleep Reset wins on access and human coaching. Sleepio has been evaluated in 26 clinical trials including 18 randomised controlled trials, with reported clinical improvement in 76% of patients. Sleep Reset pairs a CBT-I-based programme with human coaches and is bought directly. The catch: Sleepio usually reaches you through an employer, health plan or prescription rather than an app store.

Why CBT-I is the thing to look for

Before comparing the two, the important point: cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia is the recommended first-line treatment for chronic insomnia in major clinical guidelines — ahead of sleeping medication. It works by changing sleep scheduling, stimulus control and the thinking that keeps people awake. It is also chronically hard to access, because there are nowhere near enough trained therapists.

That access gap is the entire reason digital CBT-I exists, and it's why both of these products deserve to be taken more seriously than the sleep-tracking apps in the same app-store category. Meta-analytic work on digital CBT-I consistently finds improvements in self-reported sleep parameters.

How big is the evidence gap?

Large. Sleepio has been tested in 26 clinical trials, 18 of them randomised controlled trials, including a placebo-controlled RCT — a standard almost nothing in consumer health meets. Reported figures put clinical improvement in insomnia at 76% of patients, with gains sustained at six months in recent work on the prescription version.

Sleep Reset's programme is built on CBT-I principles and adds human coaching, which is a reasonable design. What it doesn't have is a comparable published trial record. That's not evidence it doesn't work; CBT-I itself is well supported, and a competent implementation with coaching may well help. It does mean one product has been tested and the other has been designed.

The thing that decides it for most people

Sleepio is largely delivered through employers, health plans and, in its SleepioRx form, prescription. If your employer or insurer offers it, you should almost certainly use it — best-evidenced option in the category, frequently at no cost to you. Check before you buy anything else.

If they don't, Sleepio is awkward to obtain, and that's where Sleep Reset's model wins: you can start this week. Reported pricing is around $150 for an eight-week programme, though figures vary by source and offer, so confirm at checkout.

There's a third route worth knowing: free CBT-I resources exist, including workbooks and the CBT-i Coach app developed for veterans. Less polished, no coach, same underlying technique.

Hannah's take

Reviews Editor — Sleep & Mind

This is the comparison in our whole library where the evidence gap is widest, and I want to be careful not to let that turn into unfairness.

Sleepio is the most rigorously tested consumer sleep product that exists. Eighteen RCTs including a placebo-controlled trial is a standard I don't get to write about often, and if you can get it through work or a prescription, the decision is made — take it, it costs you nothing, and nothing else in the category is close.

But an app you can't obtain has an effectiveness of zero for you specifically. Most people reading this won't have Sleepio available, and telling them to admire its trial record while they lie awake is useless advice. Sleep Reset delivers a technique that is itself well evidenced, with a human attached, and you can start it tonight. That's worth something real.

So my actual recommendation is a sequence, not a winner. Check your employer benefits and ask your clinician about SleepioRx first. If both are dead ends, Sleep Reset — or a free CBT-I workbook, which costs nothing and uses the same technique. What I'd avoid is spending a year on sleep trackers hoping the number improves. Measuring insomnia does not treat it.

Who should choose which

Choose Sleepio if…

  • Your employer or health plan offers it
  • Your clinician can prescribe SleepioRx
  • You want the best-evidenced option and can access it
  • You're comfortable with a fully automated programme

Choose Sleep Reset if…

  • Sleepio isn't available to you
  • You want a human coach checking in
  • You want to start this week
  • You'd rather buy directly than go through a benefit

Choose neither if…

  • You want a sleep tracker — that's a different product and won't treat insomnia
  • Your insomnia follows pain, breathing problems or medication — see a clinician first

Sleep Reset is the better pick for most individual buyers for one unglamorous reason: you can actually get it. Sleepio's evidence only helps you if it's available through your employer, plan or prescriber.

Frequently asked questions

Is Sleepio or Sleep Reset better?

Sleepio has far stronger evidence — 26 clinical trials including 18 RCTs and a placebo-controlled trial, with reported clinical improvement in 76% of patients. Sleep Reset is easier to obtain and includes human coaching. If Sleepio is available through your employer, plan or a prescription, take it; otherwise Sleep Reset is the accessible option.

How do I get Sleepio?

Usually through an employer, a health plan, or as SleepioRx via a prescription. It isn't primarily sold direct to consumers, which is its main practical limitation.

Does CBT-I actually work for insomnia?

Yes — cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia is the recommended first-line treatment for chronic insomnia in major clinical guidelines, ahead of medication, and meta-analyses of digital CBT-I find improvements in self-reported sleep.

Is there a free CBT-I option?

Yes. Free workbooks exist, as does the CBT-i Coach app originally developed for veterans. Less polished and without coaching, but the same underlying technique.
