How accurate is either of them, honestly?

Less than the charts imply, and it matters which signal they're built on. AutoSleep reads heart rate and motion from an Apple Watch — a physiological signal. Sleep Cycle infers sleep from microphone and accelerometer data with nothing on your body. Physics favours the watch.

Set both against the published literature and the more useful point emerges: every consumer device detects sleep well and wake badly. In an independent 2025 study of six wrist wearables against polysomnography, sensitivity to sleep ran 92–96% while specificity for wake ranged from 29% to 52%. If you lie still and awake, nearly all of these will score you as asleep — and a phone on the nightstand has less to go on than any of them.

The price difference is larger than it looks

AutoSleep is a one-time $7.99. Sleep Cycle is $39.99 a year. Over five years that's roughly $8 against $200 — a 25x difference for a category where neither product will be measuring anything a clinician would accept.

One-time pricing is rare enough in health apps to be worth naming as a virtue. AutoSleep has no renewal to forget, no retention flow, and nothing to cancel. On our Price & value axis that's worth a great deal.

So which should you actually install?

If you own an Apple Watch and will wear it overnight: AutoSleep, and you're done for $8. If you won't wear a watch to bed — which is a completely reasonable position — Sleep Cycle is the best of the no-wearable options, and its smart alarm and sound recording are genuinely useful features that AutoSleep doesn't attempt.

What neither can do is tell you why you slept badly, and neither can detect sleep apnoea. If you snore heavily, wake unrefreshed for months, or your partner has noticed you stop breathing, the answer is a sleep study, not an app.

I run the sleep bench here, which means I spend a lot of nights wired to a reference device, and I want to be blunt about what these apps are for.

They are not measurement instruments. A microphone on a nightstand estimating your REM is doing something closer to astrology than polysomnography, and even the watch-based version is working with a signal that the published literature says gets wake detection wrong more often than right. If you want to know your sleep architecture, none of this is the answer.

What they're genuinely good for is consistency. Both will show you, accurately, roughly when you went to bed and roughly when you got up, over months. That trend line is the useful output, and it's the one people ignore in favour of a deep-sleep number that carries a wide error bar nobody displays.

So: AutoSleep if you have a watch, because it's better-sourced and costs less than a sandwich. Sleep Cycle if you don't, because the alternative is nothing. And in both cases, look at the bedtime column rather than the hypnogram.
